Kitesurfing in Koh Phangan

One of the best beginner-friendly kite spots in Thailand

Kite Club Koh Phangan sits directly on Thong Sala Beach (GPS 9.9320°N, 100.0647°E) — a reef-protected flat-water lagoon in the Gulf of Thailand. From mid-January to April the SE trade winds blow a steady 9–20 knots, with March the strongest and most consistent month. Sandy bottom, 28 °C water and standing depth for 100+ metres make it the easiest place to learn to kitesurf in Koh Phangan — and one of the safest in Southeast Asia.

IKO & IWO certified kitesurf school

All instructors hold IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization) and IWO certifications, and the school is right on the beach — no transfers, more time on the water. Our multilingual team teaches in English, Russian, Arabic, German, Ukrainian and Thai. Established in 2021, we have trained hundreds of riders from complete beginner to independent level. Courses from 3,500 THB include all equipment and a personal progression plan.

Kiteboarding seasons in Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan's position in the Gulf of Thailand gives it two main kiteboarding seasons: SE trade winds mid-January–April (flat, glassy lagoon at Thong Sala — ideal for beginners and all levels) and the SW monsoon June–October (Thong Sala and Baan Tai, choppier but strong, 8–25 knots). In November–December north-east winds open a third window at Chaloklum on the north shore for experienced riders.

Kitesurfing lessons and prices

Kitesurfing lessons in Koh Phangan follow the IKO system step by step. The Discovery Course (3,500 THB) is 2 hours of kite control and body drag — the best way to try the sport. The Beginner Course (11,000 THB) takes you through water starts to your first rides; most students ride within 3 days. The Independent Course (18,000 THB) adds riding upwind and self-rescue up to IKO Level 3, so you can kite at any spot in the world. Kite, board, harness, helmet, impact vest and radio-helmet coaching are always included.

Three beginner mistakes — and how we fix them

Death grip on the bar. Nervous students pull the bar hard and the kite overpowers them. We start you on a smaller kite and train a light, fingertip touch.

Wrong board angle on the water start. Point the board downwind and you stand for a second, then sink — your instructor sets the 45° angle with you between attempts until it becomes automatic.

Not committing. Hesitating halfway through the pop-up kills your speed. Through the radio helmet your instructor counts “3, 2, 1, stand” in your ear — after a few countdowns you commit without thinking.

More than a kite school

The same school on Thong Sala Beach teaches wing foil (IWO, from 4,000 THB) and windsurfing (from 4,000 THB); on windless days try e-foil at Chaloklum Beach (from 2,000 THB), SUP or kayak rental. Riders with their own gear keep it in our storage next to the water. For your first day to kitesurf in Koh Phangan bring swimwear, a rash guard, reef-safe sunscreen and cheap sunglasses — and leave your ego on the sand. Everyone falls at first; that's how every kiter on the island started.

Most beginners reach independent riding in 6–10 hours — typically 3–5 days. The Discovery Course (2h) covers kite control and body drag. The Full Beginner Course (6h/3 days) takes you to first water rides. The Independent Rider Course (10h/5 days) gets you riding upwind on your own with an IKO certificate. Progress depends on wind conditions and prior board sport experience.

Yes — Koh Phangan is one of the best places to learn in Southeast Asia. Thong Sala Beach has a reef-protected flat-water lagoon, sandy bottom, 9–20 knots of consistent SE trade wind from February to April, and 28°C water. The flat water means beginners spend more time riding and less time recovering from crashes compared to most other kite destinations.
